Each year the National PTA Reflections Program offers opportunities for children in kindergarten through 12th grade to be recognized for their creativity. Students of may participate and create original works of art that is based on the theme: “Within Reach”.

The six different categories of art are dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, visual arts. In visual arts, only 2D (2-dimensional) art is accepted. Do not submit 3D (3-dimensional) art. Attached to this flyer are the summary of rules for participation and a student entry form.

Each student may enter only one piece of art for each category. For example, in the visual arts category, a student can only submit one painting.

Photography art work and visual arts submissions must be mounted on cardboard, foamboard, or matboard. Artist archival tape (linen tape), glue sticks, liquid glue, painters tape, rubber cement, or spray adhesive can be used to mount the art work to the board. Stores that sell cardboard, foamboard, and / or matboard include but are not limited to these retailers: Aaron Brothers, Artist and Craftsman Supply, Blick Art Materials, Fred Meyer, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics, Lake City Picture and Framing, Office Depot, Staples, and Target. Unmounted photography and visual arts entries will be returned and will not be displayed.

Dance Choreography Rules

  • Only new and original choreography inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Each entry must be the work of one student only
  • Video must not exceed 5 minutes in length and 1GB (one gigabyte) in file size.
  • Cite background music (if any) on the student entry form.
  • Accepted video file formats include: AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV, and FLV. Save as a FILE and NOT a movie.
  • Label video file and DVD/USB Drive with your student name, title of artwork, category, grade division, PTA name and number.
  • Original signed and completed student entry form should be securely affixed to the front of the re-closeable manila envelope in a sheet protector or plastic sleeve. Student entry form must be accessible. DO NOT use re-sealable bags (i.e. Ziplocs).

Dance Choreography entries (DVD or USB) may not be returned by WSPTA!

 

Film Production Rules

  • Only new and original videos inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Each entry must be the work of one student only.

Literature Rules

  • Only new and original literature entries inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Each entry must be the work of one student only. Entry may be hand written or typed on 8.5”x11” paper.
  • Student name should not be on the front of the entry (to help facilitate a blind judging).
  • Entry should be single sided.
  • Entry should include page numbers (if more than one page).
  • Entry may be illustrated, but will be judged on the written content. Graphic novels are acceptable.
  • Writing must not exceed 2,000 words.
  • Entries should not be mounted or bound (including no staples).
  • Label back of last page of entry or USB drive with your student name, title of artwork, category, grade division, PTA name and number.
  • Original signed and completed student entry form should be securely affixed to the front of the re-closeable manila envelope in a sheet protector or plastic sleeve. Student entry form must be accessible. DO NOT use re-sealable bags (i.e. Ziplocs).

Literature entries may not be returned by WSPTA! Keep a copy for your records.

  

Music Composition Rules

  • Only new and original music compositions inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Each entry must be the work of one student only.
  • Audio recording must not exceed 5 minutes in length and 1GB (one gigabyte) in file size.
  • Accepted audio file formats include: MP3, WMA, WAV, ACC (M4A), and FLAC. Save as a FILE and NOT a movie.
  • Label CD/USB Drive with your student name, title of artwork, category, grade division, PTA name and number.
  • Notation is required for middle school and high school divisions only. See below for notation requirements.
  • Original signed and completed student entry form should be securely affixed to the front of the re-closeable manila envelope in a sheet protector or plastic sleeve. Student entry form must be accessible. DO NOT use re-sealable bags (i.e. Ziplocs).

Music Composition entries (CD or USB) may not be returned by WSPTA!

  • Notation & Score Required for students who are in 6th grade or higher grades. Notation software may be used to create a score. Whether the score is handwritten or computer-generated, appropriate instrumentation and voicing are required for the performance. Number each page. Print on 8.5x11 (one sided only) or save/scan score as a single PDF.

 

Photography Rules

  • Only new and original pieces of photography inspired by the theme may be submitted.
  • Each entry must be the work of one student only.
  • Print image MAY NOT be smaller than 3X5 inches and no larger than 8X10 inches. Accepted print formats: Mounted on mat or poster board no larger than 11X14 inches. Framed prints are not accepted. Digital image dimensions must be at least 640x960 (pixels) and 300 dpi (resolution). Accepted file formats: JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG.
  • Art with added graphics and / or lettering over the image must be entered as Visual Arts.
  • Mark proper orientation on back of entry.
  • Protect entries with transparent cellophane wrap or sleeve designed for artwork (This is strongly recommended but not a requirement). DO NOT laminate or use plastic food wrap.
  • Student name should not be on the front of the entry (to help facilitate a blind judging).
  • Label back of entry with your student name, title of artwork, category, grade division, PTA name and number.
  • Original signed and completed student entry form needs to be in a sheet protector or plastic sleeve. Student entry form must be accessible. DO NOT use re-sealable bags (i.e. Ziplocs). 

 

Visual Arts Rules: 2 Dimensional Art

  • Only new and original pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted. Each entry must be the work of one student only.
  • Print MAY NOT exceed 24”x30” and 1/2” thickness, including matting. Entries should be mounted on foam core, sturdy cardboard, mat board, or some other rigid material.
  • NO wood, metal, plastic, glass, or framed canvas.
  • Mark proper orientation on back of entry.
  • Protect entries with transparent cellophane wrap or sleeve designed for artwork (This is strongly recommended but not a requirement). DO NOT laminate or use plastic food wrap.
  • Student name should not be on the front of the entry (to help facilitate a blind judging).
  • Label back of entry with your student name, title of artwork, category, grade division, PTA name and number.
  • Original signed and completed student entry form should be placed in a sheet protector or plastic sleeve that is attached to the back off entry. Student entry form must be accessible. DO NOT use re-sealable bags (i.e. Ziplocs).
  • Accepted forms of visual art include: Collages, photographic collages (multiple photos cut/pasted), computer-generated image, dioramas, drawing, painting, and printmaking.
  • Do NOT submit 3 Dimensional Art (e.g. glass object, jewelry, mobile, model, origami, pottery, sculpture)
